Our Beach

The Calm Before the Storm

Those of us who live here sometimes forget the gem we have in Tybee Beach but when family and friends come to visit, we know that it’s a must on the must see tour. A week ago one of my brothers came to visit and we had just a few days for him to see our Savannah.

It was a Saturday morning so he had to go along on weekend chores. We loaded up our recyclables for the dump and dropped them off to the well-organized trash heap and he had to admit that it made him want to do more recycling. Next we headed to the Farmer’s market at Forsythe Park and Ty was blown away by the gathering of folks who walked, played tennis and shopped for farm fresh foods and the Savannah made coffees.

We had planned to walk downtown so Ty could pick up a few souvenirs but my daughter pointed out that Ty had not been to the beach.

We got there a few hours before an unusual rain storm which would last for the next two days but that was just enough time to get in the seashell shopping Ty needed to do. As we drove over to Tybee, I pointed out Oatland Island Nature preserve and Fort Pulaski. Ty was taken by the marsh and wonderful natural trail he saw along the way. The Tybee Lighthouse and forts made him stop and stare and then there was the beach.

He loved it as soon as he arrived and then the locals showed enough love for him to really see why I call this place home.

And then there was North Beach Grill, the cozy and laid back upscale beach bar and grill  is one of my favorite places to eat---in the world. The flavors are divine and everything is fresh and made to order. I’m vegetarian and often find it hard to eat out, but North Beach Grill has lots of offerings for me and my meat eating family. I always leave room for dessert because they are amazing and I’ve got the beach for a gym.

I moved here from San Diego and I actually lived at the beach, so I’m used to seeing sand and the ocean, but Tybee offers something that I didn’t have in California; the history, the food and the folks.
Just one more reason why we all love our Savannah.
